Immigration

Immigration . . . . Oklahoma’s House Bill #1804 on Immigration has caused a great deal of controversy and miss-information regarding what is going to happen on November 1, 2007.  Companies in the private sector will not be required to do anything other than what they have been doing until July 1, 2008.  On that date they will be required to implement some sort of electronic verification of social security numbers on all new hires.

According to a few government agencies, effective November 1, 2007, the bill will require that they be assured that all contractors€’ employees have legal status in the United States. How you provide that information is still unclear.  They can ask for this requirement as part of a job pre-qualification.  To ask you to do anything beyond the current I-9 form is difficult.  This may be a point of contention.

Other legal authorities have suggested that a simple one-line statement could be added to employment applications that states, “The company has the right to acquire a form of electronic verification of social security status.” (Realize that you can’t do that until they are officially hired.) It is also recommended that you place a statement of company policy on immigration status in your official employee handbook, but not until July 2008.

To offer an explanation of HB #1804 and what you should do is best - see link.
